Great timing, Marie, as we just wrote a post about this exact topic last week! (https://millionmilesecrets.com/guides/hyatt-pay-my-way-award-booking-tips/).

Basically, if you use Pay My Way, you can select the award nights you want and pay the rest with cash. Then you can immediately reach out to Hyatt Concierge and cancel the paid nights, leaving you with just award nights.

I was just wondering about using Hyatt points to book a room. I’ve come across this problem as I want to stay at the Hyatt Andaz in Maui, for 6 nights. The whole 6 nights in a row are “unavailable to use points” so I broke it up into 3 nights and 3 nights. the First 3 nights it says I can book with points. The next 3 nights the website says “unavailable” but if i do FOUR nights, they are available, just like in your article. My question is, if I do 4 nights, do I need to buy more points to book it, or can I just pay for 3 nights with points, and one night with cash? Because if I change the reservation to 3 nights, I want the refund for the night back to my credit card, and not stuck with points. Thank you for your help.

Radisson Blu has a policy of not releasing points rooms until 5 months (or so) before the desired arrival date. You can book a paid room (just not non-refundable) and change to a points room when it becomes available. You’ll need to call Radisson to make the change.

Hi Jasmin! Open hotel alerts is only for paid rooms. I can set an alert for a standard room and when it becomes available, that usually means an award night is possible. For instance, Hyatt Regency Kyoto had no availability during my planned travel dates. I set an alert to be notified when a standard room was available. When I got the alert, I went to Hyatt’s website and sure enough there was award availability.

Yep. I ALWAYS call to make sure the hotel knows that our ONLY intention is to procure a “standard room reward” and they almost always immediately move us to a “regular” room. The first time i learned of this tip was when i phoned Hilton Reservations and the person answering told me that she was searching the same way.

Hi Lillian – That’s a great example of how weird hotel award booking systems can be – thanks for sharing. Enjoy your award stay and happy to hear it worked out for you!

Hi Chad – Thanks for sharing. This is a somewhat controversial workaround that not everyone would be comfortable doing because – even if Hilton says it’s ok – booking an accessible room means it’s not available for someone with a disability who might actually need it.

I do know of folks who’ve booked accessible rooms when they’re the only room available, but called the hotel immediately afterwards to let them know they don’t actually need the accessibility features and to move them to a standard room if one becomes available.

It’s a tricky one.

There were no points dates available but I checked once a week and after six months of checking change the type of room to a family room and it was available. So I booked it and save $400 . Annoying and strange!
